Social Dance Ethical Code

Principles of Ethical Social Dance Practice

This ethical code establishes guidelines for respectful participation in social dance spaces, with particular emphasis on Afro-Lusophone traditions and their cultural context.

Core Principles

1. Respect

Honor the cultural origins of dance practices. Recognize and acknowledge the African and Lusophone heritage of the dances we practice.

2. Consent

Always ask before dancing with someone. Respect verbal and non-verbal communication. Accept rejection gracefully.

3. Inclusivity

Welcome dancers of all backgrounds, skill levels, body types, ages, and identities. Create accessible and welcoming spaces.

4. Cultural Awareness

Approach cultural practices with humility and a willingness to learn. Avoid appropriation and commodification of cultural traditions.

5. Continuous Learning

Engage with the history, music, and cultural context of the dances. Seek knowledge from authentic sources and experienced practitioners.

6. Community Care

Look after fellow dancers. Speak up about concerning behavior. Support event organizers in maintaining ethical spaces.
